Did you know that the electricity required to light a 40 watt bulb is enough to kill you? That is very true.
The voltage of the electricity and the available electrical current in regular businesses and homes has enough power to cause death by electrocution. Even changing a light bulb without unplugging the lamp can be hazardous because coming in contact with the “hot”, “energized” or “live” part of the socket could kill a person.
Did you also know that a regular residential power line can deliver 100 times the lethal level of current through your body? Now you know so next time you change out a light bulb at home or at work ensure the power / lamp is unplugged.
According to the research, in Alberta or Saskatchewan alone there are at least three power line contacts each day. Every year in Alberta there are on average nine injuries and one fatality due to power line contacts.
How does this affect you? As long as you use and work around electricity you’ve got to understand the safety surrounding electricity. Keep in mind that incident involving power lines can range from burns, to loss of limbs, to loss of life. It is a known facts that four fatalities related to power line incidents in the oilfield was recorded from 2007 -2009.
Please be safe when working around powerline and ensure you are following all the applicable legislation including the client’s requirement. Don’t be a part of the statistics.
