Crane Suspended Work Baskets
Personnel work baskets shall only be used when other methods would create a greater hazard or other methods are not possible due to the structural design or site conditions. Alternate methods of access shall be considered before using the personnel work basket as an option.
The use of a personnel work basket shall require approval by the supervisor and Pipeworx management. The determination must be made that the erection, use, and dismantling of conventional means of reaching the work site, such as a personnel hoist, ladder, stairway, aerial lift, elevating work platform, or scaffold, would be more hazardous or is not possible because of structural design or work-site conditions. The work basket must have current certification by Third party. The Lift Calculation for Personnel Work Baskets shall be required prior to using the personnel work baskets. In addition a Job Safety Analysis shall be developed for all lifts or series of lifts. Personnel shall keep all parts of their body inside the personnel work basket during raising, lowering and positioning.
Tag Lines shall be used for all lifts. Tag lines must be sufficient in length to distance the worker from being underneath the load (basket) or exposed to other hazards associated with lift. Hoisting of personnel shall be discontinued upon indication of any dangerous weather conditions or
other impending hazards. No personnel hoisting is permitted when the wind velocity is greater than
25km/h (15.53 m/h).
The use of a harness is mandatory when using personnel work baskets. Depending on the design of the personnel work basket, and regulatory requirements, personnel in the basket shall attach harness lanyard hooks to either a separate safety line from above the ball; or lanyard safety hooks must be attached to a fall arrest engineered point(s) on the work basket when the design of the work basket makes attaching to safety line above the ball dangerous. The attachment method shall be identified in the Job Safety Analysis.
