Inspection and Testing of the Crane Personnel Work Basket
The crane, personnel work basket and associated rigging to be used shall be inspected by a competent person at the beginning of each shift before hoisting personnel. A trial lift shall be made for each new work location and at the beginning of each shift to ensure there are no obstructions and that all systems controls and safety devices are functioning properly.
It is recommended a trial lift be performed in the following sequence with the maximum rated load
(test weight), evenly distributed in the platform:
- Suspended by the secondary support, lift personnel work basket 1m (3ft) of the ground to verify the integrity of the work platform and secondary support.
- Suspended by the primary support, lift the personnel work basket 1m(3ft) to verify the integrity of the primary support.
- Suspended by the primary support, lift the personnel platform to all work locations to verify the lift routes and that these work locations can be reached by the crane using a maximum of 50% of the crane’s capacity for all components, and /or at the working radius.
A visual inspection of the crane, work basket and associate rigging and base support shall be done after the test lift to determine adverse effect upon the components results documented. Any defects found shall be corrected and inspected in accordance with engineering/manufacturer specifications before further use of the work basket.
A documented meeting attended by the operator, persons to be lifted, and the supervisor and workers
responsible for the task to be performed shall be held to review the project Safe Work Procedure and other information related to the lift such as the Lift Calculation Form for Work Baskets etc.
